Scabies is an itchy condition, which is highly contagious.
Spread by skin contact from person to person. This condition is not just itchy it is “drive me crazy itchy”. The cause is a small, barely visible, eight legged critter mite called Sarcoptes scabei. The mite is transferred from person to person from skin contact, sometimes as casual as a handshake. The mite will mate on the surface of your skin and the female mite will burrow under the top layer of the skin (stratum corneum) where she creates a “burrow” to lay her eggs and “raise her young”. The eggs hatch in several days, and the juveniles make their way to the top of the burrow, complete their life cycle, become adults, mate, and the whole cycle repeats.
It may take three or four weeks for you to start itching after the mite has landed on your skin. So you need to recall four weeks ago what you were doing and who you were with to determine where you picked up the mite. If you do figure it out, that person needs to be notified so he or she can get treatment also. Nothing says you can’t get scabies a second or third time, if your luck is really that bad. In these cases, the itching will start within a few days of contacting the mite.
Scabies is easily transferred through the family members by direct skin contact or by furniture, clothing, etc. (fomites). There are several things you can do to help rid you of these mites.
- Use CutiCare or Naturasil sulfur soap twice daily in the shower. Their sulfurs specially formulated soap is actually lethal to the mite (miticidal) and will kill the mites on your skin. Work up a rich lather and allow it to stay on the skin for about 3-5 minutes and then rinse. The soap is safe for infants however; the dermatologist may give you something else to treat the infants in the family.
- After you have applied the prescription cream, wash the bed linen, put on fresh laundered clothes, and vacuum the furniture. When you launder your old clothes run them in the dryer with high heat.
- Since the mite can live off the human skin for up to 48 hours under ideal conditions, if there is anything not washable (fuzzy slippers, bedspreads/comforters, etc.) just set them aside for 48 hours and the mites will die.
- You may want to see a dermatologist, you will need special pills that will kill the mites via the bloodstream and into the skin where the mite is living.

Most skin infections are written off as rashes or allergic reactions. However it is not always so. There are certain skin infections which are caused by bacteria and other micro-organisms. Scabies is one of these skin infections.
Scabies is a skin disease which is caused by very small itch mites, which affect humans and animals like cats and dogs. These itch mites can't survive on their own for more than three days. But on a host's body, they can live for months or even years. The scabies mites lay eggs in the host's body. These eggs later hatch and grow into adult mites. So, it is very necessary to eliminate the scabies mites and its eggs from the body. Products called scabicides are used to kill the itch mites and eggs in the body.
The common symptoms of scabies are severe itching, skin rash which are red in color and blisters on the skin. While waiting for your Naturasil treatment to arrive you can treat your self and family with products listed below to help tame scabies. You can find these from your local stores, like Wall-mart, Wall-green and others. Scabies in humans can be treated and prevented by natural oils. The most popular natural medicines for scabies are tea tree oil and neem oil. Such oils have medicinal properties. These oils help to heal and soothe the itchy skin.- Epsom Salt: Soak in 2 cups Epsom Salt warm bath once before bed time. After your bath everything MUST be free of scabies mites, from the bedding, towels, clothing etc.
- Sulfur Soap: Scrub your self/ scabies patient every nook and crannies from head to toes, allow the soap to stay on for 3-5 minutes before rising it off, turn off the shower if you need to.
- Sulfur Creams: Sulfur creams are excellent over the counter treatment for scabies. Use a 2.5% concentrate sulfur cream for infants, and 10% concentrate for adults. Take a bath before going to bed and then apply the cream from head to toe. Repeat this process for 3 consecutive nights. On the fourth day you can have your normal shower. If there's no access to Sulfer Creams us Tee Tree Oil.
- Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is a very effective scabies treatment. Benefits of tea tree oil have been widely heralded especially because of its antifungal and anti-bacterial qualities. Apply tea tree oil on the affected area in the morning and night for scabies home treatment.
- Antihistamines: Oral antihistamines are very helpful over the counter treatment for scabies. They provide relief from itching and they also help in sleeping. Buy a 10 mg antihistamine containing hydroxyzine. Take this antihistamine once in a day for treatment of scabies.
- Lice Soaps: Soaps and shampoos especially made for killing lice help to get rid of mites which are on the skin surface. However, they are not effective for killing mites which are under the skin. So, one can use lice killing shampoo on their hair and scalp, and use soap over their body to eliminate mites on the skin.
Here are some tips to help you reduce post scabies symptoms.

Important Caution About Scabies
To eliminate scabies, it is important to keep these following things in mind. These tips will help you in prevention and cure of scabies.
- Seek medical aid when the above, over-the-counter treatment for scabies fail to give relief.
- Before using any product for scabies treatment, read the instructions on the label properly.
- In some cases, itching might continue for few days even after treatment.
- In pets, symptoms might worsen while undergoing treatment for skin disorders caused by scabies.
- Avoid any contact with a scabies affected person or animal.
- Wash your towels, clothing and bed sheets. Dry them in a hot dryer.
- Scabies itch mites thrive in places like garbage dumps and can't survive in clean places. Keep your surroundings clean to prevent the growth and spread of scabies mites.
- Even after the scabies has been treated, one should use a mite killing soap and shampoo once in 15 days for 2-3 months, to ensure that scabies won't recur.
Resistance
There is a strong possibly that scabies mites have become increasingly resistant to the commonly prescribed treatment ointments, evidenced by the numerous reports of repeated treatment failure. According to an article published by medscape.com, in the early 90s before widespread use of permethrin treatment was introduced, all mites were killed within 30 minutes of in overexposure to permethrin. By 2000 35% of the mites were still alive after 3hrs of exposure and a substantial portion remained alive overnight. Does this mean treatments such as permethrin don’t work? Absolutely not, but the possibility of resistance is REAL and if you are struggling to get rid of scabies with traditional treatments, you might want to explore other options.
Personally I think, be precise and consistence with your treatments might help eliminate the possibility of Scabies Mite having a chance to build up their immune system. I like to think of it as Bugs, bugs have a short life cycle therefore, they can easily adapt and build up their immune system very quickly, and I just don’t want the possibility of resistance on my body. Look at Bugs and Farmers, farmers uses pesticides to kill/stop bugs from destroying their crops, but we still see bugs living in the farm and destroying crops everywhere. I like to believe in this theory and eliminate the chance of resistance.
Good luck to those in desperate need, below are links to end your Nightmare with out doctor visits and endless supplies.
